ESRC PhD Collaborative Studentship

Young children’s engagement with television and related-media in the digital age

Principal Supervisor: Professor Jackie Marsh, School of Education, University of Sheffield

Co-supervisor: Dr Rebecca Parry, School of Education, University of Leeds

The student will be registered at the University of Sheffield.

This ESRC-funded studentship is a collaboration between CBeebies and the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds.

The proposed study will focus on young children’s engagement with television in the digital age. In recent years, children’s television consumption has become firmly embedded in anintertextual, multimedia network in which programmes can be watched on-demand across a range of media platforms, some transportable, and children can engage in play with products/artefacts/sites related to the programmes in offline and online contexts.

There is a need to understand how children’s television viewing is undertaken in this complex media landscape. In addition, there is a need to identify what factors influence children’s choices as they move across channels and platforms and how their viewing patterns change at key transition points in their lives: for example, starting nursery or school.

The objectives of the study are to …

identify television-viewing patterns of 3-6 year-olds

examine the relationship between children’s television viewing and their engagement with other media, digital technologies and related texts and artefacts

analyse the transitions in children’s programme and channel choices and related activities over time and at key points: for example, the move from nursery to primary school

identify the implications of the findings for CBeebies programme development, the children’s media industry, parents and early years educators.

The project will involve a mixed-methods study involving a large-scale survey of parents of children aged from 3 to 6 and qualitative case studies of a small group of children across this age group as they consume television and related media in the home over an extended period of time.

The study will focus on families from economically and socially disadvantaged communities, given the lack of research in this area. The successful student will have an opportunity to undertake a two-week internship at CBeebies at MediaCityUK, Salford in order to develop knowledge about the children’s television industry.

How to apply

Applicants must have an upper second-class UK honours degree or equivalent and a Masters degree in a relevant subject area.

Applicants should submit the following documents to MPhil-PhD@sheffield.ac.uk.

A CV.

A personal statement indicating how your qualifications, experienceand research interests make you a suitable candidate for this scholarship.

Full transcripts of previous undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications including Grading System and IELTS/TOEFL Certificate.

A piece of academic writing, such as an essay, dissertation or article.

Two academic references.

Closing date

15 March 2013

Interviews will be held on Monday 8 April 2013 at CBeebies, MediaCityUK, Salford. Any travel costs incurred are to be met by the applicant.

Further information

The School of Education at the University of Sheffield is part of the ESRCWhite Rose Doctoral Training Centre.

The successful applicant will be a member of the Centre for the Study of Literacies.

Centre for the Study of Literacies

The successful applicant will have her/his PhD fees paid at the appropriatelevel for three years and will also receive an annual stipend equal in value to the ESRC standard maintenance award (£13,726 in 2013-14) over this period.

Any queries should be directed to Professor Jackie Marsh at j.a.marsh@sheffield.ac.uk. Successful candidates will be notified by the end of April at the latest.

The Leeds Social Sciences Institute and Research & Innovation Support have established a seedcorn funding scheme to support new interdisciplinary research activities. The principal aim of the scheme is to encourage research staff from different disciplines to come together to explore some of the most pressing research challenges facing society.

See Lunchtime Conversation Series – Strategies and Challenges for Interdisciplinary Research Projects – an event on 28 November 2012 to discuss ideas for interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary grand challenges.

In this section:

Introduction

RCUK Cross Council Themes

Introduction

Obtaining ‘seed-corn’ funding to get a new research idea off the ground can be crucial in developing new research proposals. With more research funders looking to support work that crosses traditional boundaries, Research and Innovation Support and the Leeds Social Sciences Institute have allocated £6k to this initiative which is intended to support cross disciplinary research projects which will, at a later stage, lead to externally funded projects which address one of the six RCUK major societal challenges:

The funds can be used to pump prime new research activities such as:

Pilot a research study

Support the development of collaborative research projects

Gather or process information that could be used as evidence for a larger research project

Timetable

Closing date for receipt of proposals: 23 November 2012
Notification of successful awards: 10 December 2012
Funds transferred and awards commence: December 2012
Project completion date: July 2013
Project report submitted: August 2013

Application Process

Applications are invited to this fund by the 23 November 2012 using the Seed Corn Funding for Social Science Application Form (Word document).

Applications must meet the following essential criteria:

The award must be held by a University of Leeds academic member of staff (but can be used to fund collaborations with other institutions

The proposed research must be interdisciplinary and relate to at least one of the RCUK themes (see separate tab above for more information on each theme)

Collaborative teams must contain applicants from more than one School / Department

A maximum of £2k can be awarded per application and all expenditure must be completed by 31 July 2013.

The deadline for applications is 23 November 2012; submissions should be made via email to Sophia Kennedy at s.kennedy@leeds.ac.uk

Applications will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Leeds Social Sciences Institute Steering Group, chaired by Professor Ian Kirkpatrick. Successful applicants will be notified by 10 December 2012.

Conditions of the funding

Successful applicants are required to submit a two page summary of research outcomes to LSSI by the end of August 2013. This must be submitted within one month of the project completion date.

Seedcorn funds can be used to fund both direct and indirect costs; monies will be transferred to a nominated University of Leeds account, and it is the responsibility of the research team to manage expenditure

MRC (Lead), AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, NERC, STFC

There is an unprecedented demographic change underway in the UK with the proportion of young people declining whilst that of older people is increasing. There are considerable benefits to the UK of having an active and healthy older population with potential economic, social, and health gains associated with healthy ageing and reducing dependency in later life. The programme provides substantial longer term funding for new interdisciplinary centres targeting themes of healthy ageing and factors over the whole life course that may be major determinants of health and well being in later life.

Recent Calls:

Promoting physical activity in older age – research on the relationships between determinants that influence an individual’s likelihood of being physically active or sedentary such as health status and socio-economic, cultural and environmental factors

Overview

The Leeds Social Sciences Institute (LSSI) is host to the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (DTC). Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the White Rose DTC is a collaboration between the universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York and is one of the UK’s biggest and most successful training centres for postgraduate researchers in the social sciences. The Centre has knowledge exchange at the heart of its strategy and trains social scientists to meet the demands of future global challenges whether working within industry or academia.

The Scheme

LSSI successfully launched the placement scheme in 2011, and now has a range of new placement opportunities for post graduate researchers from across the social sciences. Working in a research capacity with an external partner, post graduate researchers will have an opportunity to engage with the needs of the external organisations and to build the knowledge gained from the placement into their future research plans.

Projects might involve:

Surveying or interviewing users or providers of relevant services to identify ways in which they could be improved

Evaluating a project or scoping out the potential for a new project which aims to bring social or economic benefits to a particular community

Gathering evidence, writing reports and responding to government consultation exercises/informing policy making

Applicants should submit a short CV plus a statement explaining why they would like to take up this opportunity, what experiences and skills make them suited to the position and what this work will contribute towards their research plans. Applications will be considered by the panel and successful applicants will be notified within two weeks of the application closing date. Written confirmation of support from the applicant’s supervisor will be required with the application.

Students can apply for more than one placement opportunity, but if offered more than on position the student must decide which one to take up. Students would not normally be awarded more than one placement during the course of their studies.

Successful applicants will receive a bursary of up to £1950 for a 13 week placement based on ten hours per week.

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: January 2013

Project Summary

The host organisation needed to understand what kind of sustained societal and economic impacts of one of their projects on local communities in Yorkshire and The Humber.

What was done?

A total of eight community groups who had received help through the programme were chosen to be case studies. Semi-structured interviews were then undertaken with the selected community groups in order to gain an insight into, and deeper understanding of, how the programme had helped them in making societal and economic impacts in their local community.

What was found?

Through the help it provides to community groups the programme in Yorkshire and The Humber has been crucial to the sustained, positive societal and economic impacts upon the local communities in the region. More specifically, it has helped facilitate sustained community impact in the over-arching areas of social regeneration, community social capital and intra-community individual-level factors. For example, impact across these areas is helping to promote and increase: community cohesion, connectedness and social inclusion; employability of community members; creation of social enterprises; trust and social interaction in the communities; respect for the community environment; and supporting the efforts of educational institutions in the communities.

Student Feedback

“I gained experience in a whole range of areas I was previously unfamiliar with.”

“I gained significant experience in working independently and using my own initiatives. For example due to the sensitive nature of the research (at a time when many organisations are having their funding reduced) I found it much more challenging to establish trust and gain access with potential interviewees in a short space of time.”

“Although the placement involved an area of research that was quite different from my PhD, I found that this did not matter, as I was able to apply many of the concepts that I was using as part of my PhD research to develop the research plan used as part of the placement. Further, I would recommend this and similar placements to fellow PhD students as such placements provide useful opportunities to gain first hand insight into experiencing and understanding how academic research can be useful within a practical context……All in all I found it an enjoyable and fun working experience as I was given autonomy to plan and conduct the research in a manner that suited my other working commitments.”

“The placement allowed me to develop a network of practitioners in my area of interest. I hope to be able to work with my host organisation again during my research career . ……This will inform my presentation of future research findings so that they are accessible to practitioners, with the intention that they will be used to inform and influence practice, thus increasing the research impact.”

“Whilst the topic of the literature review was broadly connected to the focus of my own PhD research (work-life balance and career experiences over time), it extended my reading into disciplines and territories that I had not encountered before – which has widened my perspective and helped me to consider my own data from new angles. The focus on gender and age issues has been especially insightful. ……. A further personal outcome has been a greater awareness of the issues surrounding working with non-academic partners – the challenges around ‘speaking the same language’ and getting your message across; and the usefulness of building bridges across differing perspectives/agendas (research and business) and learning from each other. I hope to be able to build on this experience to more effectively engage in knowledge transfer in the future……. I would like to thank Leeds Social Science Institute and An Inspirational Journey for giving me this opportunity, and I would heartily recommend similar placements to other PGR students.”

“The placement has been very useful to me as a postgraduate researcher in many ways. Lessons have been learnt during the interviews and these lessons will be applied during the interviews in my own PhD research. Some of these include probing skills, framing questions and taking notes … It has provided useful lessons to be incorporated into future studies and offered the opportunity for a potential publication.”

Two awards of £2,800.00 (plus £400.00 to cover expenses) are currently available to law undergraduates studying at Leeds. The awards are intended to assist students undertaking unpaid or poorly paid internships or work placements related to public interest law where, without such independent financial backing, the student would be unable to take up this opportunity. The deadline for applications is 15 June 2011.

‘Public interest law’ is defined broadly as any legal work conducted on behalf of individuals and/or causes on the basis of individual or group concepts of justice, equity and the public good, rather than for purposes of commercial or personal gain.

Eligibility

A student is eligible to apply if s/he is currently enrolled in a law undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds for the academic year 2010/11. Preference will be given to students returning to Leeds following their internship or placement.

Applicants must provide evidence that they have been given a firm offer of a work placement/internship with an organisation engaged in the practice of public interest law and that, subject to funding, they are in a position to take up the award. If by the application deadline, the applicant has not yet received confirmation of an offer, s/he needs to show that s/he has applied for a position and then, if successful, the money will be released when the applicant has provided evidence of a confirmed offer.

With their consent, we will publish the names and placements of successful applicants on the School of Law website and may seek to publish this information in other relevant publications of the University of Leeds.

On conclusion of the placement or internship the successful applicant will be required to write a short report (1,000 to 2,000) words which will be provided to the donor for stewardship purposes. This report must be provided within 6 weeks of the completion of the internship and (with the permission of the applicant) may be published on the School of Law website.

Awards are only valid for 12 months from the date on which they are offered. No awards will be made retrospectively for internships/placements that have already been completed. No award may be deferred except in exceptional circumstances as determined by the Access to Justice Internship Awards Panel.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria will be applied when considering each application:

Suitability of applicant to the internship/placement intended to be undertaken with regard to background and experience;

Benefit to applicant’s professional development and a possible future career in public interest law by undertaking the internship/placement;

Ability of the applicant to demonstrate a commitment to public interest legal work;

Genuine financial need for the Internship Award to assist with taking up the internship evidenced by:

student is receiving Leeds Bursary or Leeds, Robert Ogden or Skipton Building Society Scholarship; and/or

student has spent significant periods in public care.

To develop our links to external organisations, we are developing a Placement Fellowship Scheme. The scheme will enable social science researchers to work with a wide range of organisations, undertaking policy relevant research and developing the research skills within the organisation.

Initially, the scheme was aimed at research and lecturing staff employed by the University of Leeds and we have now extended the scheme to postgraduate students. Further opportunities will be available in the future via the new White Rose Doctoral Training Centre.

We have a number of PGR placement opportunities available with local organisations in the voluntary, third and public sectors, on a 13 week placement for 10 hours per week, beginning between 1 and 28 April 2011, to address their research needs.
